As Team Nigeria continues to wait for the government to provide funds
for thorough preparations to begin for the 2016 Olympic Games holding
in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the National Association of Nigerian Students
(NANS) has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) to release the
necessary funds to the various sports federations in the country, so as
to enable them execute their various programmes and prevent a repetition
of the debacle in London, in 2012.
The body also requested that
the president launches a probe into the missing N2.9bn which was meant
to aid Team Nigeria’s successful outing at the All Africa Games in
Brazzaville, Congo, last year.
This was contained in a press release signed by association’s national director of sports, Comrade Godwin Erheriene, yesterday.
Erheriene
called on the president to get the anti-graft agencies to launch a
probe into how the funds were used and “help recover what is left of
it.”
The group assured that, if, eventually, the funds for the
Olympics are released on time, Team Nigeria has the “huge potential and
is primed to do Nigeria proud at the Olympiad.”
